Newbury Blues only needed one try to pick up their eighth win on the bounce, beating Grove 16-5 at Monks Lane on Saturday afternoon.
Appropriately enough ahead of Valentine’s Day it was Josh Love who got Newbury’s try in the second half, after a trio of penalties had given the Blues the early advantage.
All three came courtesy of Nick Wackwitz, who opened his account after just three minutes to set the Blues on the right path.
The second came on 27 minutes and third just before half-time, giving the home side a 9-0 lead at the break.
They were finally able to get a try a quarter of an hour into the second half as Love went over, with Wackwitz kicking the extras to increase the advantage to 16 points.
Grove were able to get a try of their own in the closing stages of the match, but it was only a consolation as Newbury took a comfortable victory, and made amends for their defeat against the Oxfordshire side earlier in the season.
With Old Patesians and Maidenhead both winning at the weekend it means that Newbury stay third in the South West 1 East on 76 points.
However things could change this Saturday as it is Maidenhead the Blues will be visiting, in a match that could help determine who wins promotion.
