Newbury Cricket Club suffered defeat in their first match of the season, although they came close to pinching a draw.
Opponents Purley-on-Thames batted first and set a total of 232-5 in 52 overs, including a century from Amit Rawal. Charlie Anstey, Martin Walker and Surya Sastry were Newbury’s best batters as all three set 30-plus scores, but the side were coming up short on the total.
Needing to survive two more balls to rescue a draw, Newbury saw the final wicket of Bobby Vynatheya fall and the match ended in defeat.
They will hope for better luck in their next Thames Valley Cricket League Division 3A match away to Cove 2nds on Saturday.
