Cycling 230 miles across Europe for charity would more than likely represent the pinnacle of most 50-something people’s fundraising ambitions.
But having already achieved that feat around eight months ago Newbury Rotarian Kevin Mosley will look to take that challenge and then quadruple it later this summer.
The dad of two is planning to get on his bike and take on the ultimate British cycling test from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
As he did during last September’s ride alongside 32 complete strangers from London to Brussels, Kevin is supporting dementia charity the Alzheimer’s Society.
The charity helped his family deal with his dad Raymond’s diagnosis in 2013, as well as the death of his mum a year later, and after raising £2,500 last time around, he is looking to double that figure.
“This is something I’ve been toying with for years but never thought I was anywhere near fit enough to even think about doing,” said Kevin.
“The society is a charity very close to me, and they really helped us out with my father and when mum passed away.
“The beauty of it is that it’s for carers as much as the sufferers, because they go through it all too.”
Charity community fundraiser Natalie Bettinson said: “It’s great that Kevin is giving his time to support Alzheimer’s Society and we’d like to wish him the best of luck in his cycling challenge.
“As a charity, we rely on the generosity of individuals like Kevin to help us continue our vital work so that Alzheimer’s Society can continue leading the fight against dementia.”
Kevin is also looking to raise cash for Coram Life Education Centres – a charity that brings extra health and wellbeing learning to children in classrooms across the Thames Valley.
The 56-year-old will join 40 people from across the country on the cycle over 12 days from August 30, as he did in last year’s endurance test.
And he told the Observer that he couldn’t wait to sample the camaraderie once again and meet a whole new group of people on his bid to cross the line.
He added: “I enjoyed the first one so much and got on with fantastic group of people and thought how am I going to top that.
“I know it’s four times as far, but I had doubts that I could do it last time around and I got through it, so I’ve got to go for it.”
