Talks are at an ‘advanced stage’ to refurbish the Waterside youth and community centre in Newbury, West Berkshire Council has said.
Lynne Doherty, the council’s executive member for children and young people, confirmed negotiations were taking place with two parties to regenerate the Northbrook Street centre.
It followed a public question from Diana Pattenden at last Thursday’s executive meeting asking about the council’s intentions for the building.
Cllr Doherty said: “The council has a long-standing commitment to refurbish this site, however the council has not been in a position to fund such a project and has been looking for partners to assist.
“I am pleased to be able to say that we are now in advanced stages of negotiation with two other parties, who are prepared to come forward to run the building and provide the resources to refurbish it.”
Cllr Doherty added: “It would not be appropriate to release further details of these discussions at this stage, however we will be delighted to do so at an appropriate time.”
