Reading West MP Alok Sharma has been appointed the UK’s housing minister following last week’s general election.
He takes over the role from Gavin Barwell, who lost his Croydon Central seat at the election by 5,600 votes.
The housing minister is responsible for policy on housing supply, home ownership and planning, as part of the Department of Communities and Local Government.
Mr Sharma said: “This is a big job and a role that matters to everyone, particularly young people trying to get on the housing ladder for the first time.
“I look forward to working with councils, housing associations, developers and investors across the UK to make sure we are building the right homes and providing appropriate housing for all.”
Mr Sharma was re-elected for Reading West – which also covers the area around Theale – with a smaller majority of less than 3,000 votes.
He added: “Locally in Reading I will of course continue to hold regular public meetings and surgeries for my constituents and champion campaigns as I have done over the past seven years.”
