A Newbury man has been handed a suspended prison sentence after groping a woman and making a lewd comment, and then inappropriately touching a woman in two different shops.
Hawkar Shwani, 23, of Fifth Road, was given a 16-week jail term, suspended for one year, at Reading Magistrates’ Court.
The offences happened on April 13 at two stores in Newbury Retail Park.
Shwani groped a 21-year-old woman in the Boots store, before making a lewd comment to her.
He then left and went across the road to Tesco, where he inappropriately touched a woman over her clothes while her young child was with her.
Shwani was charged with two counts of sexual assault the following day, and pleaded guilty in court on May 9.
As well as the suspended prison sentence, Shwani also has to register with the police for seven years in accordance with the sexual offences act.
PC Lucie Chhetri from Newbury police station said: “Shwani’s actions took place in broad daylight in two busy stores.
“He showed a total disregard for the law and sexually assaulted two women.
“His swift arrest, charge and bail conditions send a clear message that Thames Valley Police will not tolerate such behaviour from anyone.”
