Thatcham Town won their second game in a row as they beat struggling Highmoor Ibis 4-2 on Saturday.
Goals from Shane Cooper-Clark, Sam Collier, Tom Melledew and Callum Willmoth sealed the victory for the Kingfishers, to back up their 2-1 win over Brimscombe & Thrupp earlier in the week.
With Ardley United and Highworth Town both losing at the weekend it means that Thatcham hold on to fourth place in the Hellenic Premier League, now with a five-point gap over their rivals.
Saturday’s game didn’t get off to the best of starts for Thatcham, with hosts Highmoor grabbing an early lead through Harry Grant after four minutes.
But it didn’t take long for the equaliser to come, with Cooper-Clark heading home from a corner just past the quarter of an hour mark.
After coming close with a free kick that was palmed away, Thatcham took the lead moments before half-time as Sam Collier knocked the ball into the back of the net after a goalmouth scramble.
It took until the 69th minute before Thatcham were able to extend their lead further, with Tom Melledew beautifully curling in a free kick for the visitors’ third of the afternoon.
Two minutes later Willmoth got the fourth, before Highmoor were finally able to respond and clawed one back with a late penalty.
Thatcham did manage to get the ball in the back of the net for a fifth time in the final 10 minutes, but it was very quickly ruled out for offside.
And despite coming close once more Thatcham weren’t able to add any more goals to their tally, and had to settle for a 4-2 final result against their Reading-based rivals.
The Kingfishers have just five league games remaining this season, and could still have a chance of pinching third place from Flackwell Heath.
Flackwell are seven points ahead but have played a game more, and the two sides are due to face each other at Thatcham’s Waterside Park on March 11.
Thatcham’s remaining games following that are against Binfield, Oxford City Nomads, Lydney Town, and the season finale away to Brackley Town Saints on April 15.
