Tragedy was averted after a dad extinguished a fire that was deliberately started at the front door of his family’s house in Hutton Close, Newbury, yesterday evening.
At around 10pm accelerant – a substance used to speed up the spread of fire – was poured through the letterbox and set alight.
Two young children were in the house at the time, but the fire was quickly put out by their dad and no-one was hurt.
Investigating officer DC Phil Stephens said: “This is an extremely serious offence aggravated by the fact that the family who live at the property have two young children who were home at the time.
“Thankfully the father managed to extinguish the fire and no-one was hurt, but this offence could have easily ended in tragedy.
“I am appealing to anyone who saw anything or anyone acting unusually in the vicinity of Hutton Close to come forward.”
Police are also asking anyone who may have seen someone with burns, potentially to their hands, to come forward.
DC Stephens added: “Residents will see an increased police presence in the area as we conduct house to house enquiries, carrying out forensic work and obtain CCTV.
“If you have any concerns please speak to a police officer.”
